Acts 17.16-34
What does it mean to be a Christ follower in a world that is called post
Christian? How do I respond to the evils of our society?
Should I build a bunker to hide myself and Jesus fro m the world around
me? Should I hide my faith until I get to church and live a segregated
spiritual life one day out of seven? If I did bring my faith up in this
world, how would I even connect to a culture so separate from Christ?
The answer to the connections between culture and the Gospel lay in our
past, but not our recent past. As we look to the apostle Paul in
pre-Christian Europe we have a window of insight for today's reality. Paul
finds himself in Athens. He is alone. He is acutely aware of a world around
him that is far removed from the world of ritual Judaism. He finds himself
not only in synagogues, but also on the mountain of the god of war, Mars
(Ares). Appropriately, he will do battle for the gospel.
